BSA 206 S2W5 : 2000's Animation

In class we looked at animation going out of the 90's and into the 2000's:

Bob Sabistan developed a program called Rotoshop, this is seen in films like Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly, he started with the short Drinks and Snacks (2000) which we watched in class:

We also watched things made by the following people, we were tasked with writing a review of one of these, of our choosing:

Michel Gondry

Chris Shepherd

Chris Landreth

Run Wrake

We watched one of his shorts in class, Rabbit (2005).

It uses a kids educational book as the foundation of its style, this works really well and serves as the initial point of difference. I think the best thing about this animation is that the story actually relates to the style, with it being a twisted moral tale. At first the novelty is how dark it is considering the aesthetic approach it's taking, but it was satisfying to see it turn into something closer to the traditional narrative structure seen in these kinds of books. It's probably the best animation we watched this week.

I was watching his follow up film, The Control Master (2008) and Dillon pointed out that it was very Adult Swim. Once I realized this the magic wore off a bit, it seems really easy and if Adult Swim can produce the same quality content - with dialogue - then what really makes these shorts different? In hindsight they kind of feel just like Adult Swim shorts, just this claims to be art so it's more legit? I don't know, what really sets this apart from their content?
